Rimsky-Korsakov:  Procession of the Nobles

   Original version for orchestra

    Philadelphia Orchestra, Eugene Ormandy, cond.

    Transcription for band

    Washington Winds, Edward Petersen, cond.

There are numerous performances of Procession on YouTube, some good (Lassiter High School in suburban Atlanta: / US Air Force Band outdoors, but still great: ) and some not so good.  There is much to be learned from listening to a weak performance and noticing how sloppy articulation, balance problems and poor tone can kill a truly inspiring piece of music.  Also, some directors must think that a procession is somehow related to the 100-yard dash! (This is an incredible performance technically, especially by a high school band, but I don't think this is what Rimsky-Korsakov had in mind.  Can anyone hear the clarinet arpeggios? Methinks THESE nobles processed in Nikes!)

Here are reference recordings of  the jazz band books that we are using.  I'll upload the individual sheet music arrangements as I get recordings.

When you click on a title, it will open up in a new window and play in whatever player is the default setting on your computer: Real Player, Windows Media Player or Quick Time (mine opens with Quick Time on my PC and my Mac).

You can also right-click on a title and "Save As" to your desktop, then open with another program.

I am also preparing CDs of the tunes and will have them at the next rehearsal.

Let me know what happens on your equipment.
